CONTEST INFORMATION
The Warlock’s Journal is an interdimensional book that moves through the planes always seeking new information. In the month of March, 2015, Tabletop Adventures hosted the book and the challenge was to describe an entrance to Faerie, the land where fey creatures live. It could be a hidden golden door, standing stone, simple mushroom ring, or many other things. The prize was $15.00 in store credit on RPGNow/ DriveThru RPG
THE RESULTS ARE IN!
The favorite entrance to Faerie, of twenty possible choices, is “Faerie Path” by John Tipton. John received a $15 gift certificate to RPGNow and DriveThruRPG as his prize, courtesy of Tabletop Adventures.
“Faerie Path” was the winner by a significant margin. “The Song of the Fey” by Aiden Buxton was the second-place choice (again by a significant margin), while “Metal Arches” by Dean Keith and “Ghost Space: The Fae’s Demesne” by Andrew and Heleen Durston were tied for third.
Congratulations to John Tipton, and our thanks to all the entrants, for providing some haunting descriptions of ways to enter the fey realm. To download the final version of “Entrances to Faerie” (with its color illustrations on the cover and inside) click here.
ORIGINAL CONTEST DETAILS
An entry can be written for any genre or type of RPG. It should include a title for the place, a description of the entrance (what it looks like and how to use it), and brief information on what a person would find there. No statistics are required, though if an author desires, stats could be included as ‘bonus material,’ not counted in the word limit for entries.
Entries should be limited to 500 words (not including the title), though they need not be that long. A person can enter more than once, but each entry must be separate. Put the entry in the body of an e-mail, reference the contest in the subject line, and also be sure to include contact information; at a minimum, name and e-mail address. Send all entries to customerservice @tabletopadventures.com. Entries must be submitted by midnight on Thursday, March 19, 2015.
All entries will be presented anonymously for voting by fans, using Survey Monkey or a similar service. (Any ties will be decided by the Overlord, of course.) The winner of the fan vote will be announced by March 31, 2015, and all entries then made available as a free PDF with credit to the authors. (Entries remain the property of their authors, but participation grants permission to use entries in the free contest PDF and any annual or other compilation that may be made later.) Members of Tabletop Adventures are not eligible to enter. Tabletop Adventures reserves the right to add more winning places or award Honorable Mention recognition at the Overlord’s discretion.
ENTRANCES TO FAERIE
Legends have been told for generations about interactions between the mundane world and that of the fey. Children are stolen by the fairies, or wander into the fairy world. A man enters a crack in a hillside, spends a night drinking with fairies, and when he returns decades have passed. The land of Faerie may be the light, happy land of leprechauns and pixies, or the more dangerous world of the beautiful but uncaring Sidhe.
The object of this contest is to describe an entrance to such a world. In a traditional fantasy setting, that could involve stepping into a ring of mushrooms (called a “fairy ring”) at midnight under a full moon. In an urban fantasy setting, it might require saying an incantation before opening a certain hidden door. One could even imagine a futuristic setting where fey-like people are the inhabitants of a world in a parallel plane, reachable only by a certain gate among the stars. These are only a few suggestions; with some imagination, there can be a multitude of possibilities.
